Most restrooms in the park are open all year and step-free. A handful aren’t, and those are the ones worth knowing about before you need one.

Before you go

Four things worth checking

The park is well provided for, but not uniformly. These four catch visitors out more than anything else.

Almost everything closes at dusk

Most restrooms run from around 7:00 or 7:30 in the morning until dusk, which in December means closing before five. The Delacorte opens earliest at 6:00 AM, and the Davis Center stays open latest at 9:30 PM — worth knowing on a long summer evening.

Four close for the winter

Tavern on the Green, Bethesda Terrace, Robert Bendheim Playground and Great Hill open late March through early November only. Bethesda in particular catches people out, because it is one of the busiest spots in the park all year round.

Two aren’t step-free

Nineteen of the twenty-one restrooms are wheelchair accessible. The exceptions are the Ramble and Wollman Rink. If step-free access matters, the Boathouse, Mineral Springs and the Delacorte cover the middle of the park between them.

Two charge to get in

The Wollman Rink and Central Park Zoo restrooms sit inside paid attractions, so you need a ticket to reach them. The Met is the opposite — its restrooms are reachable without an admission ticket via the Uris Center entrance, though everyone goes through a security check.

How to read the list

Three things that vary

Every entry in the directory above tells you these three. They are the difference between a short walk and a long one.

Hours

Mostly 7:30am to dusk

Dusk is the operative word — closing time moves with the season, so the same restroom shuts at 4:30 in December and 8:30 in June.

Season

Four are summer only

Late March through early November for Tavern on the Green, Bethesda Terrace, Robert Bendheim Playground and Great Hill. The other seventeen are open all year.

Access

19 of 21 step-free

Wheelchair accessible almost everywhere. Two locations aren’t, and two offer all-gender facilities.

Questions

Restrooms in Central Park, answered

Twenty-one public restrooms across the park, at attractions, landmarks and playgrounds. Nineteen are wheelchair accessible and two offer all-gender facilities.

Most run from around 7:00 or 7:30 in the morning until dusk, which means they close considerably earlier in winter. The Delacorte Theater opens earliest at 6:00 AM. The Davis Center stays open latest, until 9:30 PM daily.

Four are seasonal, open late March through early November only: Tavern on the Green, Bethesda Terrace, Robert Bendheim Playground and Great Hill. The remaining seventeen are open all year.

Almost all of them. The exceptions are Wollman Rink and the Central Park Zoo, whose restrooms sit inside paid attractions — you need a ticket to reach those two.

Two. The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers an all-gender option, as does the Davis Center — which also has gender-neutral shower rooms available during the summer pool season.

Yes. They are reachable via the Uris Education Center entrance at 81st Street and Fifth Avenue, and an admission ticket is not required. All visitors go through a security check first, and the Museum is closed on Wednesdays.

Use the map above — each pin shows the closest restroom to that part of the park, with its hours and whether it is step-free. As a rule of thumb there is one within about a ten-minute walk of anywhere in the park.
