Chess & Checkers
Twenty-four tables, no charge.

Can you just turn up and play?

Yes — with one catch.

Nothing to book, nothing to pay. Twenty-four tables sit under the trellis at the Chess & Checkers House and there are more scattered through the park, some with boards printed straight into the stone. Sit down and play.

The catch is the pieces. They’re lent free — chess, checkers, dominoes and backgammon — but only during staffed hours, and those hours vary with the season rather than following a fixed timetable. Turn up on a quiet weekday in February and you may find a beautiful empty pavilion and no way to get a set out of it. Two minutes on the phone before you cross the park solves it, or bring your own board and the question never arises.

Where to play

Three ways to get a game

The pavilion is the heart of it, but not the only option. They’re not interchangeable — whether you can borrow pieces, and whether anyone else is there, is different for each.

Getting a game

Work out where you actually want to sit

Three different answers depending on what you’ve brought and who you want to play. Pick the one that matches your afternoon.

What kind of game is it?

Choose the closest match.

Head to the Chess & Checkers House

Mid-park at 64th Street. Twenty-four shaded tables under a trellis, and a counter that will lend you chess, checkers, dominoes or backgammon for nothing while it’s staffed. Hours vary with the season, so ring 332-255-3128 first. Find it on the full park map before you set off.

Take any table in the park

Game tables are scattered well beyond the pavilion and several have chess boards imprinted into the surface already, which saves you carrying one. They’re quieter and usually empty. One warning: bring pieces sturdy enough to withstand the wind, because a light set at an open table will not survive the afternoon.

Come for the Lecture & Simul Series

Free events on selected summer weekends, run by the Conservancy at the pavilion. A grandmaster gives a lesson on strategy and then plays a simultaneous exhibition against up to thirty players at once — all ages, all standards, no entry fee. The boards fill, so arrive early rather than on time.

Check the hours before you cross the park

Opening hours at the Chess & Checkers House vary seasonally rather than running to a fixed timetable, and the pieces only come out while it’s staffed. Call 332-255-3128 first — it is a two-minute call that saves a walk to 64th Street for nothing.

Borrow during staffed hours only

Chess, checkers, dominoes and backgammon are all lent free of charge at the counter, but only while someone is there to hand them over and take them back. Outside those hours the tables are still yours — the pieces aren’t.

Bring pieces that can take the wind

If you’re playing at a table elsewhere in the park, weight matters more than looks. Light plastic sets blow over mid-game and you will spend the afternoon reconstructing positions from memory. Weighted pieces and a roll-up board travel well and behave.

Arrive early for the Simul Series

The simultaneous exhibitions take up to thirty players against one grandmaster, and the boards fill. They run on selected weekends through the summer and cost nothing, which is exactly why turning up on time matters more than usual.

Bringing your own

Playing anywhere in the park

You’re welcome to set up a game on any table in the park, and on a warm afternoon there are far worse places to spend three hours. It takes almost nothing to do it properly — and one thing that catches people out every time.

Mid-park at 64th Street — an octagonal brick pavilion, newly restored in 2023, with twenty-four outdoor tables shaded beneath a wooden trellis. It’s a short walk from the south end of the park and close to the ballfields.

Yes, free of charge, during staffed hours. Pieces are handed out at the counter and returned the same way. Outside staffed hours the tables are open but there is nothing to borrow, so bring your own or call ahead on 332-255-3128.

Four: chess, checkers, dominoes and backgammon. All lent at no cost while the House is staffed, which makes it one of the better-value afternoons available anywhere in Manhattan.

Nothing. The tables are free, the loan of pieces is free, and the Lecture & Simul Series is free as well. There is no permit, no booking and no charge of any kind.

Absolutely — game tables are scattered throughout the park and some already have chess boards imprinted into the surface. Bring your own board and pieces, and make sure they’re sturdy enough to withstand the wind.

They vary seasonally rather than running to a fixed schedule, which is why calling ahead is worth the two minutes: 332-255-3128. Restrooms at the House run 7:30 AM to dusk, which is a longer window than the piece counter.

A free series run by the Conservancy on selected summer weekends. Grandmaster players give lessons on strategy, then play simultaneous matches against up to thirty people at once. All ages and standards welcome — the point is to play someone far better than you and find out why.

Yes, at the Chess & Checkers House, open 7:30 AM to dusk. Worth knowing if you’re settling in for a long afternoon at one of the more distant tables.
